Changing and Checking Consumables

Checking and changing consumables throughout the day will help keep your cut quality stay consistent and your torch running well. The pictures below are taken from the Powermax 85 Manual.

The main consumables you will be changing out are the electrode and the nozzle. More often than not, when you change one you will change the other/ You will typically get about 2 to 3 hours of “torch on” cutting time.

The shield and retaining cap will be changed out as needed and usually last a long time before burning out.

You should be changing out the Swirl ring about once a month.

- Is you start getting 030 alarms on your Powermax a lot, it could be caused by a bad swirl ring

Fine Cut Consumables:

The nozzle on a fine cut is rounded and requires a special shield to use it.

- Fine Cut operations are run at 45A (except for 20 Ga. and under)

Checking Consumables:

You will be able to tell if your consumables are worn by the way the torch is cutting, the sparks the torch makes, and the cut quality. With torch height control active the torch will start to get closer to the material as the electrode starts to wear. Bad starts, low quality material, expanded metal cutting, and other factors can cause consumables to wear faster than normal. We recommend that you check your consumables often.

The chart below shows what to inspect on your consumables and can be found in the Powermax manual on page 5-3.
